Moisture wicking underwear... are they really all that they claim to be?
This is a bit of a strange review to be doing... however, as a woman, it is one that must be done. I don't know about guys, but hiking for long periods of time can lead to underwear ridding up, uncomfortable friction as well as leaving a girl feeling... well... less than dry in those areas we all prefer not to talk about. What is more, excessive moisture in your nether regions or wearing the wrong under wear can be more than just a pain in the bum (pardon the pun) but can can lead to a host of problems including urinary tract infections (UI) and the growth of candida, which can result in yeast infections. These can be prevented if you pay special attention to what you wear below the waist.
With this in mind I begun to look into moisture wicking products. There are two which I decided to try the Jokey performance plus underwear retailing for about $19.95 and Kotex sport liners retailing for just under $4.
Jokey performance plus underwear - These were hands down my favourites out of the two products. These undies are made from super soft material. They are so comfortable you can hardly tell you have anything on at all! and you really do stay dry all day. Another great feature is that they have a a silicone edge (about 4 lines of silicone at the back of the underwear) which really makes the undies stay put and not ride up when you are constantly climbing over obstacles such as boulders. The draw back with this undies is that you do need to be fairly kind with this undies so you don't ruin the wicking ability (don't use fabric softener on them) or put them in the dryer (say goodbye to the silicone strips).
Kotex sport liners - These are obviously the cheaper option of the two, and while they have great wicking ability, they are only liners leaving you at the mercy of the dreaded wedgie. Also there is a real problem with landfills... hence I prefer an option which eliminates the need to constantly discard product.
I am still thinking of giving the new merino undies a go in a few weeks so I will update the review as soon as I have tried them out.
